On free semigroups of automaton transformations

It is established that the subset of freek-generated subsemigroups of the semigroup of all automaton transformations over a finite alphabet is a second category set (in the sense of the Baire category approach) in the set of allk-generated subsemigroups. A continuum series of pairs of automaton transformations each of which generates a free semigroup of rank two is indicated. Operators which have a closed quasi-nilpotent part

We find several conditions for the quasi-nilpotent part of a bounded operator acting on a Banach space to be closed. Most of these conditions are established for semi-Fredholm operators or, more generally, for operators which admit a generalized Kato decomposition. For these operators the property of having a closed quasi-nilpotent part is related to the so-called single valued extension property.

     

Multiple closed trajectories of a relativistic particle

In this paper we study in some particular cases, the existence and multiplicity of closed trajectories of a relativistic particle moving in some electromagnetic fields. To solve this problem, we use Hamiltonian systems and variational methods.

Closed Curves in E 2 and S 2 Whose Total Squared Curvatures and Almost Minimal

The total squared curvature of a closed plane curve is minimized by a covering of a circle, if the rotation number of the curve is not zero. We measure the closeness of a closed plane curve to a circle by the difference of its total squared curvature from the minimum. A similar result is obtained for a simple closed curve in the 2-sphere.     

Rotators,periodicity, and absence of diffusion in cyclic cellular automata

Cyclic cellular automata are two-dimensional cellular automata which generalize lattice versions of the Lorentz gas and certain biochemistry models of artificial life. We show that rotators and time reversibility play a special role in the creation of closed orbits in cyclic cellular automata. We also prove that almost every orbit is closed (periodic) and the absence of diffusion for the flipping rotator model (also known as the ant).     

On the Stieltjes moment problem on semigroups

We characterize finitely generated abelian semigroups such that every completely positive definite function (a function all of whose shifts are positive definite) is an integral of nonnegative miltiplicative real-valued functions (called nonnegative characters).     

Chaos caused by a strong-mixing measure-preserving transformation

The chaos caused by a strong-mixing preserving transformation is discussed and it is shown that for a topological spaceX satisfying the second axiom of countability and for an outer measurem onX satisfying the conditions: (i) every non-empty open set ofX ism-measurable with positivem-measure; (ii) the restriction ofm on Borel σ-algebra ℬ(X) ofX is a probability measure, and (iii) for everyY⊂X there exists a Borel setB⊂ℬ(X) such thatB⊃Y andm(B) =m(Y), iff:X→X is a strong-mixing measure-preserving transformation of the probability space (X, ℬ(X),m), and if {m}, is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers, then there exists a subsetC⊂X withm (C) = 1, finitely chaotic with respect to the sequence {m _i}, i.e. for any finite subsetA ofC and for any mapF:A→X there is a subsequencer _i such that lim_i→∞ f ^r i(a) =F(a) for anya ∈A. A new thermochemical splitting cycle of sodium chloride for chlorine and sodium hydroxide production

A new thermochemical closed cycle of sodium chloride for the preparation of chlorine and sodium hydroxide is presented in this paper. The optimum conditions of the main reactions in the cycle were obtained from a series of experimental results. The heat flow of the cycle system was calculated based on the related thermodynamic equations and data. The kinetic study of the heterogeneous reaction in the cycle was carried out by means of a thermogravimetric method. The result shows that the proposed cycle demonstrates an obviously energy-saving advantage over all the other methods of chlorine and sodium hydroxide productions. It may become economically competitive with the current electrolytic method in the future.     

An axiomatic approach to equivariant cohomology theories

This paper presents a translation of a theorem of Cartan into an equivariant setting. This work is largely based on the study of the homotopical algebra in the sense of Quillen of the category of simplicial objects over the category of rationalO _g-vector spaces. The application is a solution to the equivariant commutative cochain problem. This solution is slightly better than the solution obtained earlier by Triantafillou in that the transformation groupG need not be finite.
